Dr. Mark A. Zainea M.D., F.A.C.C., F.S.C.A.I.

As the President and Chief Medical Officer of Cardiology Associates of Michigan, P.C, Dr. Mark Zainea has seen the practice grow from a solo practitioner with three employees to a single specialty group of seven physicians, a certified physician assistant, and approximately 25 employees in three offices in both Macomb and St. Clair counties. Dr. Zainea was born and educated in southeast Michigan, and he has spent his entire career serving the residents of this region. He has been recognized by his peers on multiple occasions with the “Top Doc” Award from Hour Detroit Magazine.

Dr. Zainea is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at Wayne State University, a Cardiology Fellow/Resident Staff Instructor at Mt. Clemens Regional Medical Center, and a Cardiology Fellow/Resident Staff Instructor at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. He has been recognized by his students multiple times as “Instructor of the Year,” and Dr. Zainea also lends his teaching expertise as a member of the Speakers Bureau for Abbott Vascular Medical – Cardiology Division.

Dr. Zainea holds staff privileges at St. John Hospital and Medical Center, St. John Macomb Hospital, St. John River District Hospital, William Beaumont Hospital – Grosse Pointe Campus, Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, and Mt. Clemens Regional Medical Center, where he is the Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab and on both the Cardiology and Medical Staff Quality Assurance Committees. He is also a member of Michigan State Medical Society, American Society of Echocardiography, and the American College of Physician Executives.

Laura Nielsen, FNP-BC

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT

Ms. Laura Nielsen, FNP-BC, is one of the newest additions to the Cardiology Associates of Michigan family. A graduate of Oakland University, Ms. Nielsen has a Master of Science in Nursing from Purdue University with a focus in family nurse practitioner.

She has worked as a registered nurse for 12 years, nine of which were focused in the cardiology field. She spent six of these nine years in the cardiac telemetry unit at St. John Hospital in Detroit and three years in the cardiac cath lab at Beaumont Hospital in Grosse Pointe. Ms. Nielsen then served in a management role at St. John Hospital for three years prior to joining the CAM team.

“Working for CAM is like a dream come true. I have a strong passion for cardiology and for patient care. I love educating my patients on their conditions. It truly makes me feel like I am making a difference in their lives. Being a part of this amazing team feels like the perfect fit for me.”

As an Advanced Practice Provider, Ms. Nielsen is available to answer questions, test and evaluate patients’ symptoms, and educate patients about how to manage their symptoms with a goal of helping them improve their quality of life.

Dr. Matthew Edwards, D.O.

“The part of my job I love best is meeting with my patients. I enjoy getting to know them and helping guide them through their personal cardiovascular journey.”

Dr. Matthew Edwards, a Michigan native, attended Oakland University for his undergraduate and postgraduate studies. After earning his medical degree from Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine in Kentucky, he returned home and completed his Internal Medicine Residency at McLaren Oakland and his Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at McLaren Macomb. Dr. Edwards then earned a degree in interventional cardiology at St. John Macomb.

Through his fellowship, Dr. Edwards received extensive training in peripheral vascular disease, which remains one of his favorite aspects of treating cardiovascular disease. He has also attended numerous conferences throughout the country, where he has had the opportunity to learn about the latest advancements in treating patients with both peripheral arterial and peripheral venous disease.

Dr. Edwards is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease. He joined Cardiology Associates of Michigan in the summer of 2019 and is currently on staff at McLaren Macomb Medical Center, Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, St. John Macomb Hospital, St. John Hospital and Medical Center, and St. John River District Hospital. He is a member of the American Osteopathic Association and the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Sherezade Khambatta, D.O.

“I am so proud to be a part of what we fondly call the ‘CAMily’ for many reasons, including how much we genuinely care about each other and our patients.”

After earning her master’s degree in healthcare administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. Sherezade Khambatta was accepted into the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Des Moines University, where she graduated with honors. From there she went to Rochester, Minnesota and completed her Internal Medicine Residency at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education. In 2011, she made her way to Michigan, where she completed both her Fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine and her Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. She was honored as Chief Cardiology fellow.

Dr. Khambatta is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Interventional Cardiology, Echocardiography, and Nuclear Cardiology. She joined Cardiology Associates of Michigan in November 2016 and is currently on staff at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital and McLaren Macomb Medical Center, where she is a member of the teaching faculty for the Cardiology Fellows.

Ann Boeskool, MS, PA-C, AACC

OUR PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT

Ms. Ann Boeskool is a nationally certified physician assistant specializing in Cardiology. She has over 25 years experience in Cardiology and works closely with each of the physicians at Cardiology Associates of Michigan. Whether it’s answering questions regarding medication or recent treatments or testing or evaluating symptoms, she is available to assist with compassion and expertise. Patients appreciate seeing her in the hospital as she assists physicians in the inpatient setting. She also evaluates patients back in the office shortly after hospital discharge to ensure proper medical therapy continues and all questions have been addressed.

Ms. Boeskool can treat comprehensive cardiology concerns and specializes in cardiovascular risk factor education, including management of lipids, nutrition, diabetes, weight, and blood pressure.  She also works closely with our heart failure management team, which focuses on educating patients and helping them understand their condition and the importance of following prescribed therapies.  Ms. Boeskool sees our at-risk patients on a regular basis between physician appointments to keep up with them and their prescribed therapies with the intent of improving quality of life and reducing frequent hospitalizations.

She is actively involved in the American College of Cardiology as a CV Team Member and is on the Political Action Committee. Ms. Boeskool is also a preceptor for PA students during their cardiology rotations or in obtaining their shadowing experience.

Ann’s enthusiasm and compassion, along with her vast experience, make her an integral part of Cardiology Associates of Michigan team.

Dr. Mouhammed Joumaa, M.D.

After completing medical school, Dr. Mouhammed Joumaa completed all his post-graduate training in Michigan at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. During this time he completed his residency in Internal Medicine and was named Chief Medical Resident. He then went on to complete fellowships in cardiology, again being honored as “Chief” Cardiology Fellow, and Interventional Cardiology. Dr. Joumaa’s fellowships included extensive training in peripheral vascular diagnostic and interventional procedures, and this specific segment of cardiovascular disease continues to be of special interest to him.

He is qualified in a number of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including coronary angiography and angioplasty and carotid angioplasty and stenting. He leads Cardiology Associates of Michigan’s peripheral vascular program and has become known for his expertise and compassionate, appropriate, and effective treatment of patients suffering with PVD/PAD.

Along with his private practice he is Co-Director of the Chest Pain Center and a Resident/Fellow Staff Instructor, both at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. He also maintains staff privileges at St. John Macomb Hospital, St. John River District Hospital, William Beaumont Hospital – Grosse Pointe Campus, Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, and Mt. Clemens Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Nancy Mesiha, M.D., F.A.C.C.,

“Heart health is different for men and women. Being the only female cardiologist in St. Clair County, I feel privileged to be able to address the specific needs of women through personalized treatment plans.”

Dr. Nancy Mesiha has made Michigan her home since 1999, when she came to the Detroit area to complete her residency in Internal Medicine at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Mesiha is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease, Adult Echocardiography, Nuclear Cardiology, and Internal Medicine. Along with her private practice, she is the Director of Cardiac CT, Assistant Program Director for the Cardiovascular Fellowship Program, and a member of the teaching faculty, all at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. She also holds staff privileges at St. John Macomb Hospital, St. John River District Hospital, William Beaumont Hospital – Grosse Pointe Campus, Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, and Mt. Clemens Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Mesiha is a member of the American College of Physicians, Michigan State Medical Society, American Society of Echocardiography, and the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Cardiologists and the American College of Cardiology, where she currently serves as an At-Large Councilor for the Michigan Chapter. She also has the special distinction of being the only female cardiologist practicing in St. Clair County. Dr. Mesiha’s areas of special interest include heart disease in women and adult congenital heart disease.
